The bioartificial liver prototype created by the researchers is the size of a cardholder. This could improve the quality of life of many patients with liver damage, according to the Argentine scientists who did the preliminary studies.

 

Dr. María Gabriela Mediavilla, director of the study, researcher at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR), dependent on CONICET and the National University of Rosario (UNR), said: “Although several intermediate stages are missing to bring our device to the medical field, we have proven in vitro tests that it works very well.
