What do the purring of cats mean?

Multiple meanings

A research team from Keele University has carried out a study to identify what the purring of cats means and the conclusion has been none other than that of multiple meanings. Depending on the situation and the needs of the animal this endearing sound can mean very different things. Study director Jan Hoole says, «Sound analysis has shown that when a cat is asking for food, either from her mother or a human, her purring has a high pitch note that is similar in frequency to a baby’s crying, but not as loud. This affects the hormonal state of female mammals and stimulates a caring and protective response to the sound emitter.
